Apple Product Reviews

Apple MacBook Air

Apple MacBook Air

This laptop is the featherweight of all notebooks weighing in at a tiny 1.38kgs, but in no way feels unstable.

The good…

The keyboard is delicate and the keys nicely spaced and illuminated with a subtle backlight. The touchpad is not over responsive, only awakening at the touch of a finger rather than every brush of your misguided palm.

The MacBook Air has not compromised on the size of its screen either, boasting an LED backlit 13.3-inch display.

The bad…

Connectivity with the MacBook Air is not one of its strongest attributes. It only has a Broadcom 802.11n wireless card and to get an Ethernet connection you would have to shell out £19 for an extra cable which takes up the one and only USB port on the laptop.

There is no disc drive built into this laptop, making it difficult to upload software. You must either connect the MacBook Air to another Apple Mac and then transfer software, or pay out a further £65 for an external USB SuperDrive.

…And the pretty

The Apple MacBook Air is a beautiful and elegant creation most suited to those who are into cloud computing who will mainly use it for social networking and a bit of light work or Internet browsing.

New slimmer Mac Mini

New slimmer Mac Mini

It is slimmer, more powerful and is greener than a Granny Smith apple; introducing the latest Mac mini desktop, a PC which shows that good things definitely come in small packages.

Let’s start from the outside and work our way in. This PC is very pleasing to the eye, it is enclosed in an aluminium unibody which is just 7.7 inches square and 1.4 inches thin. It is carved from a single solid block of aluminium using computer numerical control.

Underneath this shiny exterior lies NVIDIA GeForce 320M, a 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 8Gb of memory, and a 320Gb or 500Gb hard drive.

One of my favourite features of the new Mac mini is that it comes with a new integrated power supply which means no more external power adapter and less clutter.

The green way

Upholding Apple’s green consciousness, it meets Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status. It is highly recyclable, uses PVC- free components and cables and contains no brominated flame retardants.

It is disappointing to see that there is no Blu-ray drive. This is a stylish space and energy saving desktop more geared towards a light user who wishes to double it up as a mini entertainment system. Prices start at around £649.

Apple Mac Pro Xeon 2.66GHz

Apple Mac Pro Xeon 2.66GHz

Apple has outdone itself once again with its new Apple Mac Pro Xeon. Thanks to new technological advances, this classic Apple style desktop is now more powerful and 1.9x faster than previous models.

One for the professionals

Whether you are working in graphic design, film editing or publishing, this desktop has what it takes to get the job done right.

The Apple Mac Pro Xeon is the fastest Mac ever and still manages to be energy efficient. For example if you’re using an application that doesn’t need every core, Turbo Boost shuts off the idle cores and increases the speed of the active ones.

One of the best things about the new Apple Mac Pro Xeon is the ease in which it can be upgraded. Not only have the guts of the machine been streamlined but accessibility has been made easy; it has a slide out processor tray and hard drive to add memory and storage.

Considering its power and expense it is not advised as a home computer but it is great for a professional user, especially those working with digital and creative media.

It is quite pricy but you get a great deal for your money and thanks to its easy upgrade facilities it will no doubt last you a long while.

Apple Guides

A guide to gaming with Apple

A guide to gaming with Apple

What gaming PC’s are on offer?

Apple produce high end, high spec computers and the best one for gaming has to be the iMac.

What features does it have?

• 27-inch screen
• 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor.
• 4Gb of 1066MHz DDR3 RAM
• 2Tb Serial ATA hard drive
• ATI Radeon HD 4850 512Mb of GDDR3 memory
• Magic Mouse
• Wireless Keyboard
• iSight camera
• wall mountable

Why is it so special?

For a start the new iMac comes with a 27-inch screen; you won’t just be playing the game, you will be in it. It’s LED lit, so it’s instantly bright and has a 2560 x 1440-pixel resolution with a contrast ratio of 1000:1.

What this boils down to is a sharper picture and more defined colours. It’s also visible from 178 degrees, giving you an excellent picture no matter where you are sitting.

An upgrade to the 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor gives you one of the fastest quad core processors around, and one of the best gaming experiences. Combined with the upgrade to the ATI Radeon HD 4850 you will have the graphics card to make the most of that screen.

Apple Company Guide

Apple Company Guide

Who is Apple?

Apple is a producer of a range uber-cool, uber desirable computers.

Remember when computers were just rectangular, beige and grey ugly things that had to be hidden under the desk, well Apple changed all that.

By putting the emphasis on beautiful design, with great performance and top components, they made computers cool and desirable; no longer the preserve of geeks.

In the final quarter of 2009 they’re expected to sell over 2.9 million Macs alone, and they employ over 35,000 people worldwide.

What do they do?

The company refuses to get involved in the low-cost price wars over netbooks and budget desktops, instead producing top quality models for a premium price.

The focus on innovation combined with environmental responsibility – many of their parts are recyclable for example – means they are lauded the world over. For the most part they are worth the hype, and few people once they use an Apple ever return to Windows.

When did they start?

Apple was founded by the ever smiling Steve Jobs in 1976, in Silicon Valley California. After struggling through the late 80s and early 90s, they returned to centre stage with the iMac. It returned them to profitability and allowed them to expand and produce the products like the MacBook, iPod and iPhone that we all know today.

Brief history of the MacBook

Brief history of the MacBook

What is a MacBook?

The iMac may have been the machine that brought Apple back into the market, and the current incarnations are still darn popular, but the sales leader is the Apple MacBook family.
The firstborn son of this family was the MacBook Pro, and it was first announced at the 2006 MacWorld Expo.

How have they changed?

The first models lacked Firewire 800 and S-Video and ran on the Intel Core Duo processor, by late 2006 the CPU was upgraded to the Core 2 Duo and mag safe power leads were added.
Now available in 13, 15 and 17-inch screens they are the high end models of the Mac family, with minimum specs of 2.53GHz Intel® Core 2 Duo  processor, 5400RPM 250Gb hard drive and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor.

The MacBook Air is the most lusted after member of the family; unveiled in 2008 at the MacWorld Expo, featuring the same unibody aluminium design as the Pro, the Air is 1.94cm at thickest and weighs only 1.36kg. It has no optical drive and has a solid state hard drive to save on space and to give you an amazing battery life of 5 hours.

The little sibling of the family is the cheaper MacBook. It was released in 2006, and the plastic bodied, 13.3 inch notebook has proved Apple’s most popular computer. With 2.26GHz Intel® Core 2 Duo, 250Gb 5400-rpm hard drive and 2Gb RAM as standard it’s still a powerful little computer.

Why do they matter?

The appearance of the Air started the current rush of high-end ultra portable gorgeous laptops that are on the market today.
