Business secrets increasingly targeted by hackers, says McAfee

Business secrets increasingly targeted by hackers, says McAfee

A new study carried out by computer security company McAfee has concluded that cyber criminals have set their sights on corporate data and business secrets.

As opposed to trying to get access to personal information such as credit card and identity details, the study says, hackers are now increasingly targetting corporate intellectual property. This includes information such as trade secrets, product development and legal documents.

IT representatives from ompanies in the US, UK, Germany, India, China, Brazil and the Middle East were inverviewed for the study. The US, UK and Germany were deemed to be the safest places for company data, while China, Russia and Pakistan were the least safe.

Raj Samani, chief technology officer for McAfee Europe, told the BBC that there now seemed to be a market for the information gained by cyber criminals. “Cyber criminals are targeting this information based on what their clients are asking for“, said Mr Samani.

The rise in use of mobile devices made data theft harder to detect, said Mr Samani, and it was important for companies to be watchful when moving into the cloud computing market.

McAfee put together guide to safe disaster donations

Whenever tragedy strikes, someone will try and benefit from it. This sad truth was acknowledged by internet security company McAfee, which, in the wake of Japan’s tsunami, put together a guide for people keen to donate money for humanitarian aid.

Whenever tragedy strikes, someone will try and benefit from it. This sad truth was acknowledged by internet security company McAfee, which, in the wake of Japan’s tsunami, put together a guide for people keen to donate money for humanitarian aid.

McAfee’s director of security research and communications, David Marcus, told Fox News that one way to spot illegitimate aid organisations was to check for PayPal accounts – normally, this is not the method of payment chosen by legitimate organisations.

Overly dramatic requests and appeals sent via social media such as YouTube should also be viewed with scepticism, Marcus said. Criminals will post emotive-looking videos, and people accessing these videos will either unknowingly download malware onto their computer or are prompted to enter personal information.

McAfee releases PC protection for 2011

McAfee has launched its 2011 range of products to help protect its customers from cyber threats this year.

According to the security vendor cyber crime has risen 22% and hackers out there are ever-evolving to find different way to steal your money and valuable information.

This latest range will protect you from the newest strains of computer viruses and the most recent hacking tactics.
