Beta versions of new Norton software available to download

Beta versions of new Norton software available to download

Symantec, the manufacturer and developer of computer security software, has made beta versions of the new software packages Norton AntiVirus 2012 and Norton Internet Security 2012 available for web users.

New features unveiled in these beta versions include an updated version of Download Insight, a download checker, as well as Insight 3.0, a tool that helps to identify and block malicious software.

The installation and scan times have also been improved, and the software now includes an interface allowing direct access to the Norton Cybercrime Index.

The beta versions of Norton AntiVirus 2012 and Norton Internet Security 2012 are available via Symantec’s website – although users have to register first.

Norton survey: Royal wedding to be online hit

Norton survey: Royal wedding to be online hit

People on the other side of the Atlantic will take to the internet in their masses to catch a glimpse of Prince William and Kate Middleton at their wedding, a survey by the internet security firm Norton has observed. 62 per cent of Americans taking part in the survey said they will follow the British royal wedding, with 32 per cent of those already following developments ahead of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s big day.

Internet users will log on to catch up on news relating to the royals or discuss the royal wedding with others – 38 per cent of participants said they will use the internet to catch up on royal wedding news, and more than 25 per cent will either watch a live stream or video footage of the wedding on a computer, laptop or mobile device.

Norton advises internet users to practise caution when browsing online content related to the royal wedding, as cybercriminals are very likely to use sensational headlines and links to lure people into unknowingly infecting their computers. Users interested in the royal wedding should keep to well-known news outlets and stay away from links or messages claiming to have “secret” information.

2010 saw 93% rise in malware attacks, says Norton

2010 saw 93% rise in malware attacks, says Norton

More than three million malware attacks were reported last year, according to Norton Security’s Threat Report. This represents a rise of more than 90% compared to 2009.

According to Norton, partial responsiblity for the rise in malware attacks lies with the increased use of social networking sites such as Facebook. Shortened URLs are a favourite way for cybercriminals to lure people onto malicious links. Similarly, mobile phone users were increasingly targeted via infected apps.

People worrying about having their credit card details stolen might be able to relax a bit, however: the average price on the market for stolen credit card information was just 4p – not exactly a huge profit.
