Corel WinDVD

Corel WinDVD

‘But my computer already plays DVDs! It has a DVD drive’, I hear you cry. So why would you need software to play DVDs? Because Corel WinDVD 2010 is the simply the best software out there.

Most people never realise the difference because they watch DVDs through Windows Media Player, Quicktime or some of the freeware like VLC.

Ever get frustrated though at Media Player’s jerkiness or the fact that the others only support certain file formats.

This is where WinDVD comes in, it supports a massive array of formats and the latest edition has been optimised for Blu-ray disc and HD formats.

The upscaling tool makes the most of standard DVDs and can often give you close to HD results.

There are several cool in video features, with pan and zoom allowing you to make the most of you screen size, bookmarking allowing you to tag a favourite scene and image capture/quick clip allows you to grab a scene as still or clip and send it to friends.

The battery optimisation settings should allow you to get the best performance with the charge you have available, perfect for keeping the kids entertained on long journeys.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X5

CorelDRAW tries to offer the best of both worlds with basic illustration, page design and photo edit tools. A professional designer might find this a bit limiting but for those on a budget who want many of the most useful tools Corel Draw Graphics Suite X5 is one of the most useful packages out there.
There is now vector illustration which means you can produce graphics and logos, it’s more compatible with Adobe Illustrator files and the Adobe® Color Management Module means you won’t struggle transferring colour profiles between the two programs.
Thanks to the Power Trace function you can quickly trace poor images, and then turn them into high quality vectors, which makes creating a logo from that perfect photo so much easier.
Another useful function is the Cut Out Lab, which allows you to cut out elements of a picture from the background, which saves time masking an object.
Independent page layers give you the freedom to experiment with different page designs within the same document.

There have been useful updates with a greater support for camera files, meaning you don’t have to waste time converting different formats, straighten image function to correct any wonky photography or scanning and easier ways to pinpoint colours.

Corel Painter 11

Corel Painter 11

Painter is a series tool for anyone interested transforming and manipulating images. It’s a serious tool for graphic artists, illustrators and anyone who does a lot of work with images.

You can now do more selecting and transforming functions meaning, that you don’t have to keep putting the image into Photoshop.

On practical terms the new program is marginally faster and you can now copy multiple layers. Even better the palettes are resizable making them far more convenient.

The big news about the new edition is that there are 40 new brushes including acrylics, blenders, chalks, pencils, pens and pastels.

One of the best features about Painter is the RealBristle™ Painting System. With pen and tablet input you can alter the width of brush strokes with the angle of your pen, just like in real life; the more vertical you hold the pen, the thinner the stroke and even the speed at which you paint will affect the depth and effect of colour.

You can build up colour by going over the same area, just as you would in real life. In fact there’s nothing that you can do with a real brush that you can’t do in Painter.

Corel Guides

CorelDRAW Guide

CorelDRAW Guide

What is it?

CorelDRAW X4 is vector graphics editor, and the latest version of a suite first produced in 1989.

A vector is an image based on geometric shapes, points, lines and curves. The information about the image is stored as a formula, meaning that screen image is only limited by the quality of the display.

A bitmap image on the other hand, like a photo, is represented in pixels and as it is scaled up will lose quality because the number of pixels remains constant.

The formula for the vector means that you can take a logo from a tiny web icon to a billboard, and back again without losing quality.

How does it work?

CorelDRAW is a huge program, but the basic building steps for creating an image are the same.

You build up illustrations using basic shapes or irregular shapes with the line tools, in just the same way that you would build up a drawing by first putting pencil to paper.

Once you have your desired image you can then you can add colour, import bitmap images, paint effects, text … the options are endless.

What else does it do?

The latest version actually includes several other packages including PowerTRACE, which can convert bitmap images into vector graphics, allowing you to take a photo and make it into a logo.

PHOTO-PAINT is a bitmap editing software, so this means that within the overall CorelDRAW you can work with both formats.

What is red eye and how does it happen?

Red eye happens when light from the camera flash bounces off the back of the eye through the blood which nourishes the eye, giving your people in the shot a slightly diabolical look.

How to prevent it?

When taking the snap check to see whether your camera has a red-eye reduction function, if it doesn’t  then try angling the flash away from eye level, although this can cause odd shadows, or move further away from your subject.

How do I fix it?

There are several methods for reducing red-eye in Corel Software.

Paint Shop Pro features the Express Lab tool bar, a beginner’s introduction to fixing photos with the most common functions you need.

Here you can crop, resize, adjust brightness and remove red eye. Simply click on the red eye icon and let it work its magic.

You can also touch up photos by removing blemishes, remove scratches, smooth out skin, and even edit out unwanted objects in the image.

Corel Digital Studio features Express Edit function which works in the same way as Express Lab.

CorelDRAW Graphics Suite X4 comes with Photo-Paint. Zoom in as close as you can and can select the areas of the eyes. Choose Image> Adjust > Colour Tone, and then hit desaturate until the red eye has gone.

Who are they?

Corel are a Canadian based international software corporation who produce an amazing range graphic design software packages.

What do they do?

They acquired the word processing software WordPerfect in 1996, though not as commons as Microsoft Word which often comes pre-loaded on machines, it is still a very popular package.

Cowpland left in August 2000 and Corel has continued under a board of directors ever since.

In December 2009 it was taken back into private ownership, by Vector Capital.

Corel DRAW: letting bodies speak

Corel DRAW: letting bodies speak

CorelDRAW functions have serious implications beyond fashion and sport. At the Institute for Forensic Medicine, in Cologne’s University Hospital 24 staff perform over 500 post-mortems a year.

Accurately illustrating results, research and teaching materials is vital, and until recently sketches were done freehand which could lead to inconsistency.

Hans-Jurgen Stoffels a graphic artist now bears almost sole responsibility for this work, and depends on CorelDRAW.

“Whether on the computer or directly by hand, precise work is essential for quality and authenticity.
