Sony tablets S1 and S2 officially announced
Sony have made an official announcement on the development and release of their two new tablets, the S1 and the S2.
The two tablets form a small niche in the Sony range called “Sony Tablet”. The former is branded as a device specialised in “rich media entertainment”, the latter is described by the company as “ideal for mobile communication and entertainment”. The S1 is the more “classic” tablet, with a single 9.4 inch display, while the S2 is made up of two separate, foldable 5.5 inch displays, that can be used together to make a larger screen.
Both tablets will run on the latest Android version 3.0 (“Honeycomb”). “Android 3.0 is a new version of the Android platform with a new holographic user interface that is designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes, particularly tablets. I’m excited about Sony Tablet as it will further spur the development of applications and network offerings which users are looking for,” said Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President, Mobile, Google Inc.
The S1 will be able, via infrared technology, to serve as a kind of remote control for TVs, and Sony Tablet users will have the option of projecting content on their tablets onto larger TV screens or to wireless speakers.
Sony Tablet will hit the stores globally in autumn 2011.
