Norton AntiVirus
Norton AntiVirus gives you complete protection from viruses, spyware, trojans, worms, bots and rootkits
Pulse updates mean that Norton Anti Virus is updated every 5-15 minutes, giving you the most up to the minute security against quickly evolving malware.
Download Insight, File Insight and Threat Insight all work together to give you more information about dodgy downloads, files or threats.
A great feature is Norton Insight Network which gives you more targeted scans and keeps your computer running efficiently.
For those PCs in a really bad condition Norton can supply a Bootable Recovery tool; download the file from the Norton website and burn it onto a CD to restore. It can fix a computer that’s so corrupted that it won’t even boot.
Norton Antivirus lacks a firewall for example, available on Norton 360, but for the money you get extensive and excellent protection.
Norton Internet Security 2010
Norton Internet Security (NIS) is the mid-range package between Norton AntiVirus and Norton 360, offering great protection but without the latter’s PC tune-up tools.
NIS will block most shades of malware including viruses, spyware, Trojan horses, worms, bots, and rootkits. It stays up-to-date with Pulse updates every 5-15 minutes for the most up-to-the minute protection and there’s a two way firewall to keep you safe from hackers.
NIS also features intelligent scanning to scan only at-risk files and stop your machine being slowed down with long scans.
Bundled with NIS is Bootable Recovery Tool, a useful piece of software which will allow you to boot and hopefully restore a machine made completely inoperable by malware.
Download insight warns of any suspicious downloads while NIS will also rate websites according to levels of safety. This gives you greater protection from damaging phishing attacks.
There’s a professional strength antispam filter to save you from the annoyance of being told you’ve won the pan-European lottery and all you need to do is send off some money to claim it.
For those with young children there are parental controls which limit what your child can access online through their account. They’re easy to customise and very useful in keeping your child’s internet experience a happy one.
Norton 360
Norton 360 is one of the most all-encompassing and commanding tools out there to protect you, your family and your PC from internet threats.
Pulse Updates, every 5 to 15 minutes or faster, ensure that your computer always has the most current protection updates on viruses.
Norton 360 Verson 4.0 Detects emerging spyware
It can spot emerging spyware and viruses in real time, it authenticates popular retail and finance sites to protect your bank details from phishing, one of the most dangerous problems on the web today.
Identity Safe is a feature that securely stores and manages your login and personal information. It will also block botnets which hackers use to seize control of your computer for spam generation purposes and for launching DDoS attacks.
360 will also speed up your computer’s startup time by stopping non-essential programs starting up simultaneously; it also deletes cookies and other unwanted internet clutter.
With Norton 360 Symantec will also offer you up to 2Gb worth of data back up to a secured online storage site.
A guide the Norton product range
If you are looking for software to protect you from hackers, identity fraud, annoying phishing scams, or are simply looking to back up your work, Norton will have the answer in at least one of its products.

Some people will receive a message about ActiveX control; if you do, don’t panic, just click the message bar at the top of the page and click “Install ActiveX” then “Install” in the next window. This ensures a safe download, but hasn’t downloaded your product yet.
The downloading process should start automatically and then follow the instructions on screen until it is complete.
How do I install the software?
Once you download is complete, installation should start automatically with file extraction, is not then simply double click the “Install Norton” icon on your desktop. When the file extraction is complete you will be shown the licence agreement, read it through, then click “I agree” to continue.
When the installation is complete you will be asked to create a Norton account. If you don’t already have one click “create a Norton account” and fill in you details. When the process is complete you will see a screen that confirms your email address and account information. Click next to activate the product.
How do I activate my software?
This step will vary from product to product but most will have to complete a system scan which will ensure your PC is not infected with any viruses or spyware. After this, if there are any problems, click the “fix now” button.

Shortened URLs lead to rise in spam
In Symantec’s July 2010 MessageLabs Intelligence Report it was revealed that spam attacks via short URLs have dramatically increased.
Paul Wood, MessageLabs Intelligence Senior Analyst at Symantec Hosted Services, said:
“When spammers include a shortened URL in spam messages, these shortened hyperlinks contain reputable and legitimate domains, making it harder for traditional anti-spam filters to identify the messages as spam based on the reputation of the domains found in the spam emails.”
