"Entertainment machines need a certain degree of raw power and the 7741 has that in abundance."
Karim Beerahee
It’s fair to say that Acer is not normally a brand people turn to when they’re looking for an entertainment machine. People tend to use brands like Samsung or Sony because of their expertise in televisions instead. Remember though – you’ll want to use your laptop as a computer as well as a screen to watch movies or on demand television, so the Acer Aspire 7741 may be worth considering.
What we like best
The Acer Aspire 7741 has a whopping 17.3 inch screen (large enough for movie entertainment) and HD audio so you won’t have to ‘headphone up’ in order to get decent sound. It weighs 3.3 Kg is which is almost hefty by today’s standards and is 1.5 cm thick – for a machine this size (which makes no pretence at portability) that’s not too bad; it’ll definitely be easy to get around the house with.
Entertainment machines need a certain degree of raw power and the 7741 has that in abundance. With 8 Gb RAM, up to 640 Gb storage and an Intel i3 processor to cap it all off this laptop is a brute. You’ll have no issues downloading, streaming and surfing all at once. Such a large screen is also ideal for gaming. The Acer Aspire 7741 machine it has the – by now no longer standard – optic drive which is part of the reason we can forgive the weight of this laptop.
The main reason you should buy this laptop is really the price. Most of its direct competitors VAIO VPCF13Z0E come in at almost double the price.
What we like least
You’ve got plenty of storage space on the Acer Aspire 7741 but if you intend to drag and drop some of your favourite movies from an external hard drive then you’ll be in for a wait. There’s no USB 3.0, so that lightning quick data transfer is something you can daydream about whilst you wait.
There is no blu-ray capacity on this laptop either, which is a shame. Its screen resolution is 1600×900 -not enough for those crisp HD videos we’re afraid. You’ll be housebound with this laptop too, as the 6-cell battery loses its juice quickly trying to fully illuminate that massive 17.3 inch screen.
Negatives aside, you get a lot of bang for your buck with the Acer Aspire 7741. It’s rare to get such decent components in one package at such a value price. You certainly need look no further if you’re after a desktop replacement with a focus on entertainment that’s not too expensive but has a nice big screen.
