"The Design standard is the lesser design suite , with CS5.5 Design Premium taking the throne, but the standard software is by no means a programme to sneer at."
Karim Beerahee
The new Creative Suite upgrades from Adobe are taking the design world by storm. CS5.5 was released to keep Adobe on the top spot, and with the proliferation of mobile devices, 5.5 will enable you to interact with operating systems such as Android on the latest tablet gadgets and smart phones.
The Design standard is the lesser design suite , with CS5.5 Design Premium taking the throne, but the standard software is by no means a programme to sneer at. Adobe CS5.5 Design Standard allows you to produce top notch print designs and digitally publish them.
What we like best
Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 is an amalgamation of the latest renditions of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat pro and a whole cocktail of others.
With the Premium edition taking the mantle this version of CS 5.5 Design is more moderately priced, unless you need the extras (read the PC Site Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Premium review.) and are willing to pay for them.
With the Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop programmes, you will have industry standard image rendering capabilities and all the necessary tools to really make your designs leap off the page. CS5.5 Design Standard enables you to create vector graphics displayable on any medium, along with the InDesign software you will also be able to create layouts for most print publish mediums as well as in online formats – this includes the capacity to author your own eBooks, edit, design and input video.
What we like least
This is really a .5 of an upgrade; those of you satisfied with your Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign programmes may want to put some serious thought into whether or not you truly require the mobile publishing tools, since that is the main reason for a CS5.5 upgrade. Whilst the tablet, eBook and smart phone market is very much in the log phase, and if that’s not your area it won’t be worth your while.
For a full package that will allow you to work for any medium of publication, the Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Design Standard is an excellent choice for those you wishing to pioneer on to the mobile device industry. Though its brother Design Premium has the works, a standard edition is a comprehensive package for design, layout, editing, PDF creation and publishing.

Image manipulation, thanks to Adobe CS5, has just got a whole lot more accessible. John Hillman looks forward to cleaning up his holiday snaps.

As we prepare for the release of Adobe SC5 suite on April 12th, we’re seeing a huge surge of online interest in one of the CS5 suite’s most anticipated updates. More than 500,000 of you have watched the video demonstration in the last two days alone.
The Content Aware Fill tool in Photoshop CS5 certainly performs an amazing trick. Simply circle the object you wish to remove, click the Delete with Content Aware Fill tool and the clever algorithm will work out the object’s surrounding environment and replace the unwanted part of the image with a background that matches perfectly.
Although it has long been possible to carry out this task using image manipulation software, the amount of time and complexity involved meant that it was normally a job for professionals and genuine enthusiasts only. What we have now is a situation where an average person suddenly finds themselves with massive editing power at the click of a button.
Judging by the enthusiasm of the last couple of days it seems that there are many hundreds of amateurs out there who can’t wait to get their hands on this new Photoshop feature.
It isn’t surprising; a future photo collection free of unwanted half-built buildings, unsightly rubbish tips and despised ex-partners? Come on, these are the holiday snaps you’ll be able to cherish forever.
