"A nice screen, respectable graphics and a decent amount of RAM makes it a great choice for everyday computing, while the cool silver design and stylish palm rest etchings give it a bit of character."
John Hillman
The HP G62 Series notebook is designed to be an environmentally conscious laptop that also delivers on performance and quality. It is EPEAT silver qualified and uses a screen design that claims to require less energy whilst keeping mercury out of landfills.
However we have been unable to put these claims to the test. What we can say is that the HP G62 Series delivers a good all round laptop performance, with a clear display and good range of features, without coming down on the wrong side of £400.
What we like most
What we have here is a very nice mainstream laptop. The HP G62-a22SA isn’t going to blow anyone away with wafer thin looks and brain melting processing speeds, but what it does is deliver a comprehensive solid and reliable all-round experience.
The design is silver with HP’s signature patterned engraving across the palm rest – giving the HP G62 Series a nice and contemporary feel. This is augmented by an attractive black trim around the screen that contrasts nicely with the chassis.
The 15.6 inch display itself has a fairly standard 1366 X 768 pixel resolution, but with added HD and something called BrightView it’s capable of delivering a perfectly acceptable picture for viewing movies and videos online.
This is backed up by a solid, if unspectacular, Intel HD graphics card with up to 1274 Mb of available graphics memory. Webcam and Integrated microphone are included so Skypeing your friends is hassle free.
What we like least
The Intel Pentium P6000 is not a high spec processor. In these days of Intel Dual Core and iCore processors you may be on the lookout for something more contemporary under the hood. This really depends what you want your laptop to do.
I don’t think that the HP G62 Series will make a spectacular gaming machine and nor will it be suitable for running multiple high spec graphic design software. There is support to increase the RAM from 3 Gb to 4 Gb and the Hard Disk Drive runs at 7200 RMP so it is by no means weak, it’s just not completely buff either.
We really like the HP G62 Series. At the £400 - £500 mark there’s a lot of competition around, but this one really does come with a good array of plus points in the kit bag. Nice screen, respectable graphics and a decent amount of RAM makes it a great choice for everyday computing, while the cool silver design and stylish palm rest etchings give it a bit of character. All in all a very decent and affordable little machine.
