We see whether Kaspersky Small Office Security can fight off the malware and keep down those overheads.
What we like best
Small Office Security is essentially the consumer product, Kaspersky Internet Security, bundled out on a larger license, and while this can be limited it does offer all the great features of Internet Security.
It’s incredibly simple to use and configure; with sliders and checkboxes for strength of protection, all in easy to understand tabs and menus.
There is comprehensive protection from malware of all shades and flavours – Trojans, rootkits, keystroke loggers – as well as a tough spam filter and a strong firewall.
KSOS has a small footprint so there’s minimal impact on system performance and it will even function on machines running Windows 98 and older!
What we like least
There’s no centralised management – basically everyone employee would be responsible for their own settings.
Kaspersky’s interface is simple, and even technophobes can get on with it, but it’s a risk.
There’s minimal server protection on offer, with only an anti-virus program for fileservers, and that only comes bundled with five or more licenses.
A price of around £40 per license plus AV protection for the fileserver is average, but the lack of centralised management may prove costly in the long run.
If you trust your employees enough to look after their own security and can live with the lack of centralised management then Kaspersky Small Office Security is a competent program.
