"The brushed metal on the interior inlay helps keep the system cool and gives it a sophisticated look."
Karim Beerahee
This is a slick looking multipurpose desktop replacement. It has all the essentials and is capable of handling the average user’s applications with relative ease.
The Lenovo G770 is by no means a light and mobile computer. Weighing in at 3 kg and with a spacious 17.3 inch screen, it has too much heft for mobile computing. However, as a static machine to be kept on the desk, or for home family use, Lenovo have come up with a real gem that won’t let you down.
What we like best
We highly rated its sibling, the Lenovo G570, and the G770 is cut from the same cloth. The specifications are almost standard now, but if you don’t need a high power computer then there’s no point in paying more for one.
The physical appearance of this laptop is quite professional. The brushed metal on the interior inlay helps keep the system cool and gives it a sophisticated look. With large screens you also get the benefit of extra wrist space and well laid out (and comfortable to use) keyboards. The G770 even has a numeric pad so if you need to number crunch, you can get the job done easily.
Desktop replacements tend to have multiple profiles on them so Lenovo have configured the G770 with enough storage to handle lots of files. Up to 750 Gb should be enough for a small family, provided you don’t have a serial downloader in the house. It also comes with a 2nd generation Intel Core of choice which is more than enough for most computer users. It will let you run Blu-ray seamlessly on the 17.3 inch display, making this laptop an ideal entertainment module. Unless you’re a die-hard gamer or need the very best of visuals, the 1600×900 resolution is crisp enough and you get decent enough sound quality from the Lenovo HD speakers.
What we like least
There’s a poor selection of ports, this laptop doesn’t come with USB 3.0 slots and only a 5-in-1 media card reader.
We imagine for student use or general family entertainment this is acceptable but if you need to transfer large files then you’ll be slowed down considerably. There are ultrabooks out there with better connection capabilities and they’re half the size of a G770.
It’s not disappointing to see a basic yet well-made computer, especially when it comes at an affordable price. The G770 is one of the better looking desktops replacements out there, they tend to be a little more plastic in build but this certainly a solid feeling machine.
