"The ThinkPad Edge is as light and portable as a netbook, but far faster and more powerful, and it has a decent size screen."
Karim Beerahee
The ThinkPad Edge represents a bold new look for the ThinkPad line; a shift away from boxy, practical business machines to something a bit more stylish and attractive for customers.
It’s still a compact business laptop but this time it comes with a choice of a red or black glossy lid, a re-designed keyboard and weighs in at a mere 1.6kg.
The ThinkPad Edge runs off the Intel® Core 2 Duo ULV (ultra low voltage) processor. The ULV gives it a great battery life, but does make it less powerful and so unsuitable for demanding tasks, like video editing.
What we like best
The build quality is great; it’s light but feels rigid and sturdy, ideal for a laptop that will take some damage over its working life. The ThinkPad Edge is as light and portable as a netbook, but far faster and more powerful, and it has a decent size screen.
The slightly raised keyboard layout is great for typing on over extended periods, something that’s vital for any business notebook.
That Core 2 Duo ULV is not the most powerful processor out there but it handles Windows 7 Professional and Office 2010 with ease, and with that added battery life makes it perfect for a business laptop.
What we like least
For some customers it might not be an issue, but we think that the lack of optical drive is a mistake. Cloud services and flash drives are more efficient ways of storing data, but CDs and DVDs are still commonplace for storage and for a business laptop to not have an optical drive is bit of a handicap.
Despite the revamped looks and glossy lid, there’s still a matt black bezel round the edge of the screen which detracts from the 13.3 inch HD screen.
The ThinkPad Edge is a good compact business laptop, with a little bit of style to differentiate it from the crowd. The ULV processor cuts down battery consumption giving you a laptop with real endurance.
It’s a good business machine, but the lack of that optical drive means it falls short of being a great business machine. A portable USB optical drive is the easy way round this, but it still feels like an unnecessary annoyance as the ThinkPad edge is not small or thin enough to justify losing the drive.

"Really good value. I rely on ThinkPad laptops this one's really comfortable to work on and not expensive either. I was after a basic machine that's not too heavy and that's what I got!"
