Norton Antivirus 11 for Mac review

Mac users may scoff at the idea of antivirus software. After all malware that attacks Mac OS is historically rare, but as they become more popular it becomes more viable for professional hackers to write software to attack them.

In January 2009 the “iServices Trojan” attacks infected thousands of Mac users who downloaded pirated software from a bit-torrent tracker.

The malware hides in legitimate looking downloads like MacSweeper – which looks like a genuine security program but it is in fact a scam.

What we like best

Mac Antivirus 11.0 offers the classic Norton service and protection from viruses, worms, Trojans and other malware which are regularly updated by Norton.

Thankfully this version doesn’t take up too much operating space, it’s unobtrusive and really allows you to just get on with computing.

The program also scans for windows viruses so you don’t pass any on to your Windows using buddies.

The user interface is very easy to use and clearly shows you any threats. It’s also very flexible and allows you to adjust factory settings.

The quarantine feature drops suspicious files so they can’t harm your computer and you can then either delete them or fix them.

What we like least

Straight out of the box it’s configured to scan everything, so once it launches it might be an idea to go and make a cup of tea and wait, it will take a while.

It is a major irritation and you will have to manually tell it not scan your iPod for example, which takes an age, but the software is easy to adjust.
