Data protection is as important as ever and Norton’s Online Backup is a solid mass storage backup package allowing you to store up to 25 Gb of data online. Doing just what it says on the tin.
It’s quick and easy to set up, and relatively easy to adjust from the automatic out of the box settings.
What we like best
One of the big pluses of the software is that it allows backups for up to five computers, giving you complete security for your family network for example.
The second big selling point is Norton’s levels of encryption, 228-bit AES covers your data when it’s being stored and 128-bit when you’re uploading.
The traditional and simple to use interface is here, with a desktop icon to launch and an icon in the tray on the bottom right of your screen, showing green for backed up or red for not backed up.
There are plenty of competitors out there, but it must be said that for the price per Gb Norton is very competitive.
It runs on its own, unobtrusively, and once you have adjusted to your own preferred settings, for example, controlling how much of your bandwidth it uses with the throttle, you probably won’t notice it’s there until the day you really need it.
What we like least
The first is a minor quibble that it still needs to download a file to work, so it’s not a totally online version like some its competitors. At just over 15 Mb however, it’s only really a problem for netbook users who are short on space.
Several of the functions can be tricky to set; it’s confusing to add on the other PCs, the automatic default backs up at random time rather than when then file is edited and the broadband throttle is automatically set to high.
Though it lacks a few functions of its competitors Online Backup allows you to store masses of data at a competitive price.

Pulse updates mean that Norton Anti Virus is updated every 5-15 minutes, giving you the most up to the minute security against quickly evolving malware.
Download Insight, File Insight and Threat Insight all work together to give you more information about dodgy downloads, files or threats.
A great feature is Norton Insight Network which gives you more targeted scans and keeps your computer running efficiently.
For those PCs in a really bad condition Norton can supply a Bootable Recovery tool; download the file from the Norton website and burn it onto a CD to restore. It can fix a computer that’s so corrupted that it won’t even boot.
Norton Antivirus lacks a firewall for example, available on Norton 360, but for the money you get extensive and excellent protection.
