"There are a few well designed and competent packages that are worth considering if you’re a home movie enthusiast, of which Serif MoviePlus X5 is one of them"
John Hillman
Choosing video editing software is a tricky business, there’s a lot of compete dross out there and some of the better ones require about two years’ worth of evening classes just to grasp the basics.
Out of this cloud of confusion there are a few well designed and competent packages that are worth considering if you’re a home movie enthusiast, of which Serif MoviePlus X5 is one of them.
What we like best
Serif MoviePlus X5 has a very straightforward interface that’s easy to get to grips with for first time users. The layout will look familiar to anyone who’s ever used video editing software before.
Serif MoviePlus X5 has three main windows consisting of the preview window, media and tools selection window and a timeline window below with separate Audio and Video tracks.
When you start Serif has included a really handy How To window with a comprehensive list of guides for completing the most popular tasks from adding and trimming clips to applying effects, adding titles and credits, background music and voice narration. You can also learn how to share your finished videos to YouTube or your iPod.
For those of you looking to get really creative there is a whole bag of tricks to play with in the media gallery, from transitions to audio and even some quite ambitious video effects such as Old Film, that will turn your home movie into a grainy sepia affair.
Serif MoviePlus X5 also has an effect called Chroma Key that lets you superimpose your friends and family onto digitally animated backgrounds.
What we like least
Serif MoviePlus X5 is not quite as fast at processing your videos as Corel VideoStudio X3 and it’s a shame that although you can work quite comfortably in HD video on Serif MoviePlus X5 there’s no Blu-ray authoring at the moment.
Serif MoviePlus X5 takes the complex world of video editing and makes it simple for the home user. The software is cheap, light and easy-to-learn, while it also benefits from some excellent advanced features for the more enthusiastic amateur, with sophisticated blend modes and layering. Well done to Serif for making something so affordable, accessible and fun, it’s the perfect software package for making all those home videos into great family movies that you can keep forever.
