"One of the unique features of the Toshiba AT100 Tablet is it’s removable back case."
Karim Beerahee
The Toshiba AT100 Tablet was released in the US and other countries under the name ‘Thrive’ which we felt was incrementally cooler, but it turns out Thrive is an established fertiliser brand, so we have to make do with the Toshiba AT100 Tablet.
This is another Android based tablet, with the 3.1 Honeycomb operating system, we’ve seen a lot of its features before, the front and back cameras, access to a custom built app store and e-book readers unique to the brand, all implemented uniquely but ultimately familiar.
What we like best
That said the Toshiba AT100 has its own selling points, which we feel make it well worthy of consideration.
One of the first things people will certainly notice is that it’s a little bulkier than recently released tablets. The size of the Toshiba AT100 Tablet is a necessary evil, since it supports full sized ports for USB and HDMI as well as an SD slot, it would be difficult to structure a svelte machine with whole size ports such as these. One of the unique features of the Toshiba AT100 Tablet is it’s removable back case, allowing you to open up the back of this tablet will allow personal improvements to be made on the hardware as well as the option of using replaceable batteries. Toshiba have designed different colour covers so you can change the colour of your tablet as well which was a popular feature with mobile phones, it’s nice to finally have a tablet that doesn’t have to be black or silver/grey.
The Toshiba AT100 Tablet sports the latest Tegra mobile dual core processor; a chip purpose built for such machinery which combined with the 32 Gb makes this tablet one of the fastest available.
The other feature we liked about the Toshiba AT100 Tablet is the QuickOffice App which allows you to remotely access your home desktop, a most valuable app; unfortunately it’s a bit more expensive than your average app.
What we like least
Although the Toshiba Thrive is more cumbersome then common tablets, I personally feel that the weight is healthy, however if you are after a svelte handheld device you could certainly find a trimmer tablet.
We also aren’t fans of the screen, which is a shame considering that tablets are all screen, really. In terms of colour saturation and viewing angles the Toshiba AT100 Tablet is simply outstripped by its competition, if you need turn up the brightness the visuals on this tablet quickly washout.
Though it’s not necessarily the most portable of tablets, the Toshiba AT100 Tablet would make an excellent addition for work at home and in the office. The full sized ports are one of its key features, we like the fact that you can plug in a mouse or keyboard for sit down work and just as easily pick up the tablet and carry it off whilst continuing to work.
