Sony Product Reviews

Sony VAIO® LV Series

Sony VAIO® LV Series

The Sony VAIO LV Series is an all-in-one entertainment system combining a desktop PC with a HD television.

This elegantly designed PC has no complicated connections, is easy to move from one room to another and comes with a handy remote control.

The LV desktop was built to take full advantage of HD entertainment. You can store up to 50Gb of multimedia data on one disc using the Blu-ray Disc™ Drive and play or record CDs and DVDs in all formats.

This desktop has built-in Dolby® speakers which make for a powerful virtual surround sound experience. Despite its amazing sound system, the PC itself is very quiet as it has been designed for home use.

Connect to a variety of multimedia applications with the Sony VAIO LV Series

The HDMI™ input port allows you to connect the screen to home theatres and gaming consoles, which works by disabling the PC while keeping the HD screen active.

The Sony VAIO LV Series is more expensive than your average desktop but you get a lot more for your money.

The Sony VAIO LV is a perfect home entertainment system and a great PC. As a bonus, its minimalistic design will fit in with most homes, avoiding the PC eyesore syndrome you get with some computers.

Sony VAIO® JS series

Sony VAIO® JS series

Sony’s new all-in-one is a beautiful machine with style to rival the iMac. In fact more than one review has referred to it as “Sony’s iMac botherer”.

In terms of hardware the JS is pretty well equipped. Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E7200 processor and 3 Gb of RAM makes it a fast machine, and there’s a large 500Gb 7200 RPM hard drive.

The 256Mb NVIDIA® GeForce® graphics card is perfectly capable of handling media playback and it is quite powerful, so as long as you’re not expecting to play Crysis: Warhead on maximum settings.

True HD picture quality

One of the real pros of the JS is the gorgeous 20.1 inch X-black LCD display. It gives you a brilliant picture and a great resolution 1680×1050p. It does however lack the full 1080p resolution to make the most of the Blu-ray Disc™ drive upgrade.

The JS has the same weaknesses as most all-in-ones; you can’t upgrade it yourself, there’s limited upgrades from Sony and if the screen goes then that’s the end of your computer.

A stylish and powerful computer that would be great as a home media centre. There are some flaws but most of these are inherent to all-in-ones; overall it’s a really good buy.

Sony VAIO® NW Series

Sony VAIO® NW Series

The Sony VAIO NW Series notebooks have an array of multimedia features, making them perfect for entertainment addicts’ on-the-go.

This is the ultimate notebook for movie buffs as the screen has been developed using patented XBRITE-ECO™ LCD technology, which makes for a sharper display. The NW series provides the option of having a Blu-ray disc drive creating the ideal portable HD experience.

These little notebooks are energy efficient too, with their “display off” button which enables you to turn off the screen and keep the machine running, conserving power and saving you time on booting up again.

Some great features but at what cost?

The NW series have some great features and these may take a lot of power to run. It is therefore disappointing that it takes approximately 2 hours 50 mins to charge the PC to 100 per cent. This is poor considering the standard battery life of the model is only 4 hours.

One of the Sony VAIO NW series is perfect for anyone who mainly uses their laptop for entertainment, be it watching films or listening to music. It has large enough memory and hard drive  to handle everyday documents and web surfing on top of all this, making it the ideal portable entertainment notebook.

A brief history of Sony VAIO

The Sony Vaio range

The Sony VAIO is a sub-brand for Sony’s computer products. Its name is an acronym for Video Audio Integrated Operation, but since 2008 it has been amended to Visual Audio Intelligence Organiser to celebrate the brand’s 10th year anniversary.

The idea was developed by Timothy Hanley, as a way of distinguishing items that use audio and video as well as been functional PC’s.

Sony’s re-entry into the computer market happened in 1996 with the launch of the new line of PCV desktops under the VAIO brand.

You can now see notebooks, laptops, desktops, media centres and netbooks adorning the famous VAIO logo.

Sony Vaio entertainment

The series of Sony VAIO are built for entertainment, whether it’s listening to music on their Dolby® Sound Room® technology or watching a Blu-ray Disc™  on a X-black LCD screen. Enviromentally friendly and often with great innovations such as solid state drives VAIOs are great computers.

Personal media specialists

VAIO’s are the best PC’s for people who wish to get their own personal entertainment system out of their laptop or desktop.

Short history of Sony

Sony was founded in 1946 under the original name of Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Company) by Masaru Ibkua and Akio Morita.

After a slight setback of the downturn of the Japanese economy after the Second World War, the pair decided to expand the business internationally.

The company’s name was officially changed to Sony Corporation in 1958, due to the fact there was already a company called TTK, but the first Sony branded product, a TR-55 transistor radio, went on sale in 1955.
Sony has now expanded to become a well known global brand. Sony UK was set up in 1968 and now employs around 4,500.
